Have you ever struggled with money? According to a Forbes article written in 2019, CareerBuilder found that 78% of Americans live paycheck to paycheck. There can be a lot of shame when it comes to discussing finances, so while it may feel like you’re alone, you are not. It’s never too early or late to start thinking about financial health or to learn something new if you’re already on the journey.

While it is always advisable to seek the help of a professional before making financial decisions (such as The Financial Gym), the information below contains free resources about money and finance. Many people don’t learn about personal finance at school or in the home, so seeking out information is the best way to learn! Whether you’re looking to find out more about investing, budgeting, saving, or have absolutely no idea where to start, there is always a free resource for you.

  1. Podcasts There are countless Personal Finance podcasts available right at your fingertips. Podcasts can be accessed on Apple Podcast, Spotify, and online for free. Martinis and Your Money, Financially Naked, Stacking Benjamins, Choose FI, and Planet Money are great podcasts to get you started. These podcasts cover vast topics, answer important questions, and feature amazing interviews. First, try a few related to topics that resonate with you, and you’ll soon find many more through the guests and services on the episodes. When listening to smart, relatable, or funny people talk about money, motivation to better your own finances ignites.

  2. Blogs Blogs are another great, free resource that can teach you a lot about personal finance. If reading is more your style, you can find blogs about Financial Independence, Investing, Retirement, Being Frugal, and everything in between. These are great because you can read people’s personal experiences about the topic you’re searching for. Reading about journeys similar to the one you’re on or where you want to go is often inspirational. These experiences can be great to learn from, but remember the people writing them aren’t always experts, so don’t make any big decisions without talking to a professional first. Some great blogs are Frugalwoods, Millennial Money, and the Financially Free Blog.

  3. Books from the Library There are many benefits to reading books, especially ones written about personal finance. From beginner’s finance to high level investing, there is a book for you. Your local library should have almost any book you could want. Some library cards even grant access to a vast array of e-books if your library is temporarily closed due to COVID-19. As long as you can avoid late fees, this is another great way to learn about personal finance for free! Hustle Away Debt by David Carlson, Your Money or Your Life by Vicki Robin, and Train Your Way to Financial Fitness by Shannon McLay are all good starters.

  4. FREE Events & Webinars The Financial Gym hosts “Wine & Learn Wednesday” every Wednesday, virtually. You don’t have to be a member of the gym to attend these events! These presentations are put on by real people, relatable, and a lot of fun. You can find other webinars by organizations such as HelloWellness, which often include topics about finance. It’s never too late to look at your finances and decide to make a big change. If you aren’t ready for that, utilize one of these free resources to take a small step. Never underestimate the power of many small steps compounded together. And, if you are ready to get serious, The Financial Gym has an amazing team of trainers ready to help you wherever you are on your financial health journey!

And although free is great, it is always important to recognize when it may be time to start investing in one-on-one financial help. If you read the above and are feeling discouraged since you already read, listen, and participate in all of the above - don’t be. Everyone’s financial situation and goals are different and the best thing you can do is get the support and help you may need!
