Diversity, Equity, Inclusion & Belonging: Food & Finances

On this episode of Financially Naked: Stories from The Financial Gym, our host is Rachel Adaline, HR Manager at The Financial Gym, and she is joined by Kadri, Level 3 Certified Financial Trainer. The Gym has a Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, & Belonging Program. To share more of that internal program with the community, the last episode of each month on the show will be dedicated to a financial topic with a DEIB twist. Right behind housing, food is the most significant line item in most people’s budgets. Food and finances are intertwined, and today Rachel and Kadri get into the details.

Trigger warning: Discussions about eating disorders, weight and weight loss.

Podcast Notes

  • Rachel and Kadri are not certified nutritionists. They’re here today to share their experience and talk about finances, food, and how they affect your physical and mental health. Money is related because you have to purchase groceries and food.

  • Rachel’s experience with food has been a roller coaster since moving to college. She eventually found her way to a nutritionist who helped create a path that worked for her.

  • When Kadri was younger, he was outside playing basketball constantly. In his 20’s, it was just a few times a week. As he gets older, things creak a little more when he gets out to play. Coming home from Europe, habit changes have led to some weight gain.

Tips:

  • Drinking water is essential. If you’re eating whole fruits and vegetables, water will come from those.

  • Consistency is key. Learn what you like to eat, what fuels you, and lean in.

  • If you don’t like grocery shopping or struggle to stick to your list, try curbside pickup.

  • If you find yourself ordering a lot of takeout, try out a meal kit service like HelloFresh or BlueApron. There’s usually a promotional period where you can take advantage of low prices.

  • Move your body in a way that feels good to you. Walking is free, and there are lots of resources out there on Youtube for folks of all fitness levels.

  • Figure out what works best for you. A lot of people are motivated by others, which is why working with a trainer or in a group class can be valuable. Community makes everything better.

  • Nobody is perfect. Remember that social media is a highly curated, filtered highlight reel. Don’t compare yourself to others.
