On this episode of Financially Naked: Stories from The Financial Gym, our host is Rachel Adaline, HR Manager at The Financial Gym, and she is joined by Catriona, Certified Financial Trainer and podcast producer extraordinaire! April is a magical time at The Gym as we celebrate Financial Literacy Month! Today Rachel and Catriona talk about financial literacy, why it’s important, and all of the plans The Financial Gym has for you to get involved this month!

Podcast Notes

  • April is a time at The Financial Gym to spread knowledge and financial literacy far and wide. The programming is designed to be accessible to everyone!

  • When clients have their first session, they often feel like they’re the only people in their position. It can feel lonely like you’re the only person who doesn’t know what to do about money.

  • It’s okay to feel nervous, and we can assure you that you’re not alone. This is why we love Financial Literacy all year round, but especially highlighting it in April!

Why is Financial Literacy Important?

  • TIAA Institute released a study that shared some staggering statistics about financial literacy in America. For example:

    • “Adults correctly answered only one-half of the questions, on average.”

    • Those with low financial literacy are more likely to have financial challenges, like difficulty making ends meet and struggling with debt.”

  • There’s so much advice floating around on the internet, and it can be challenging to know where to start. The goal of Financial Literacy Month is to make it feel more accessible.

  • Improving your financial literacy will help save you time, energy, and stress and improve your everyday life.

What is Financial Literacy?

  • According to Investopedia, “Financial literacy is the ability to understand and effectively use various financial skills, including personal financial management, budgeting, and investing.”

  • A solid financial base is essential, which is what we focus on at The Gym. We teach the basics while ensuring the process is enjoyable and sustainable.

  • We’re not formally taught Financial Literacy in school, and most of us are learning as we go! This month's programming will help build that strong foundation and guide you through leveling up!
