Podcast Notes

  • If you have served or are the family of someone who has, you deserve benefits, no matter what that service looks like. These benefits are offered to everyone, and taking advantage of them does not take those benefits away from someone else.

  • There are different types of benefits on the federal, state, and sometimes even local levels, and it’s worth exploring what’s available to you.

  • The VA includes healthcare, general benefits, and funeral services. If you’ve served, you can apply for any of these benefits.

  • The benefits available to you depend on your discharge status. If you need help upgrading that status, there are services out there to help you.

  • No matter your status, there are certain benefits and care you qualify for, including PTSD and care if you’re experiencing suicidal thoughts.

Applying for Benefits

  • There are benefits you can access online and others through physical VA locations. Going online is step one.

  • This step just tells the providers: This is who I am, and these are the benefits I deserve.

  • Disability - the range goes from 0% to 100% and is calculated using a complex formula. When you apply, list everything and upload all of your medical records.

  • If you’re still on active duty and have health issues, visit the doctor and get documentation. It will be helpful in the future.

  • Report everything from headaches to anything you experience. Nothing is too small, especially if you’ve been deployed.

  • The PACT Act provides benefits specifically for people who have been deployed.

  • Dependent benefits - and caregivers. If you are a caregiver or family member of a veteran, You can also likely apply for certain benefits. These can include a stipend to care for or upgrade parts of your home.

  • Contact your elected official’s office if you need help accessing benefits. They can be the best advocates for you.

Gentle Reminders

  • Discharge status can significantly impact the type of benefits you can receive. Some populations do not have access to the benefits because of discrimination within the military.

  • Never assume someone’s military status because anyone can look like a veteran.

  • If you’re feeling overwhelmed or unsure where to start, talk to another veteran about their experience and if they have trusted resources local to your area.

  • Never pay someone to help you apply for benefits or file claims. There are veterans services organizations out there that will help you completely for free.

  • If you aren’t comfortable with one organization, you can choose another. This process can be emotionally taxing or frustrating, but in the end, it is worth it because you can access the needed services, care, and funds you deserve.
