Diversity, Equity, Inclusion & Belonging: Avoiding Employee Burnout

On this episode of Financially Naked: Stories from The Financial Gym, our host is Rachel Adaline, HR Manager at The Financial Gym. She is joined by Jenny Maenpaa,  LCSW, EdM, founder of Forward in Heels coaching practice, which empowers all women to stand tall and step into their power so they can light up the world.

Rachel and Jenny delve into the journey of self-discovery and financial empowerment, sharing insights from their experiences and their work. Jenny brings her expertise as a licensed psychotherapist and author, focusing on empowering women to overcome burnout and embrace their full potential. Jenny's evidence-based approach to work-life wellness empowers individuals to achieve holistic fulfillment and professional success.

Podcast Notes

  • In her twenties, Jenny wanted to help everyone, which led her to pursue education and social work. She loved the work but did not love the bureaucracy, constantly being told no and feeling stagnant in every role.

  • The biggest turning point is when Jenny realized she had everything she needed to give herself permission to do what she wanted, rather than finding it from an outside source. Jenny wanted to take everything she had learned and bring it to other people. It started with 1-1 coaching and has evolved into a self-paced online course.

  • The clients who come to Forward in Heels are the ones who 'did everything right' by societal norms but still find themself unhappy or unfulfilled. Things are technically fine, but people are looking for more than 'just fine.'

  • The Covid lockdowns changed how many people look at their life. Every single path is different. Now more than ever, they're challenging old systems and seeking real change.

Getting out of your own way

  • The 'Mean Girl' is what Jenny calls the voice in your head that says things like, 'You aren't good enough and never will be.' She created the Mean Girl quiz to identify and overcome self-sabotaging behaviors and foster self-awareness.

  • We can minimize that voice or use our 'Mean Girl' as motivation. The quiz will help you identify which type of voice is in your head and email you concrete steps to counteract it.

  • Combating societal pressures and perfectionism is crucial to achieving sustainable success. You have to figure out what your true values are. Knowing your values allows you to assess your priorities to determine if they're aligned.

  • This is not about toxic positivity. Most of the time, there is something we can do differently. There is something that can change. You just haven't thought of it already, which is where a coach comes in.

Final Thoughts

  • Any goal you want to achieve takes time. When you start to see results, it can motivate you to keep working. As long as you align with your values and the path meant for you, you can continue.

  • It's not about having it all. Prioritize one thing at a time. Some things will fall by the wayside, but with a strong foundation, you can pick them back up when you're ready.

  • Ask for help and lean on your community. So many of us have been raised to be hyper-independent, but we aren't meant to do it all alone. Connecting with others and accountability can be a powerful way to work on your goals.

  • We invite all the listeners to embark on a journey of empowerment, armed with knowledge, support, and the courage to pursue their dreams. Working with a coach at The Financial Gym or Forward in Heels can help take you to the next level.
