Podcast Notes

  • Background and Early Career: Hillary's career has taken many twists and turns over the years. She's always been interested in people, so she started her career with a psychology degree.

  • Career Happy and Transition: Hillary transitioned to career coaching in 2017, focusing on helping people network, find jobs, and get out of their own way. She enjoys doing work where she can see an immediate impact.

  • Corporate Chapter: Hillary decided she wanted a change of pace. Rather than managing or being in charge of a business, she wanted something more stable. She worked for an organization with high-level executives. It was a wonderful experience, and she learned a lot and built confidence.

Career Coaching Insights and Philosophy

  • Career Happy: Hillary coined "Career Happy" to describe finding joy in one's career. So many people are trying to find a career they are happy with, which is absolutely achievable. It's about finding the parts that truly light you up and leaning in where you can.

  • Realistic Expectations: Searching for happiness does not mean you will love every moment of your work or always be happy. There will be challenges in every role or position, but overall fulfillment and happiness can be found.

  • Continuous Learning: Both coaches and clients are constantly evolving, learning new skills, and adapting to new roles. Treat each experience as a learning opportunity and embrace the empowering nature of learning new skills.

  • Career Transitions: Hillary discusses the importance of being responsible when making career pivots. You always want to keep relationships professional and respectful, even when leaving an organization.

Practical Career Advice

  • Self-Reflection: It's common to constantly think ahead to what's next, but pausing to reflect is an important part of the process. Hillary recommends journaling and stream-of-consciousness writing as an exercise.

  • Recognize Achievements: Most people are great at telling themselves they are not good enough. When reflecting, remember to list out everything you have accomplished in your career so far and the key achievements.

  • Be Intentional: These assignments are designed to help you become more intentional. If you're an overthinker or can't get out of your way, these exercises can help you let your thoughts and feelings flow.

  • Energy and Thoughts: Your thoughts and energy shape your personality. If you want to change your life, it starts with changing your thoughts and mindset. It's important not to lose the essence of who you are.

Final Thoughts

  • Finding Mentors and Coaches: If you feel stuck, you do not have to figure things out alone. Working with a coach or Trainer like those at The Financial Gym can provide support and help you uncover and focus on your goals.

  • Learning from Experience: Reflecting on past roles and experiences can help you identify what you like and dislike and aid in making decisions about the future.

  • Workshops and Networking: Hillary mentions the Inspire Accelerator workshop, which focuses on personal branding, LinkedIn optimization, networking, and strategic searching. It includes sessions, Q&A with recruiters and peers, and worksheets.

  • Practical Tips: Take small steps toward your goals every day. Remember to stay true to yourself and not lose your essence, even in challenging times.
