Erika decided to become a Certified Financial Trainer because she wants to help others become empowered with their money and create the kind of life they could have never imagined. Erika believes that every person has unlimited potential, and that they can create a value-filled life.
Erika’s passion for personal finance started in college when she first became 100% responsible for supporting herself and managing her money. At first, she felt limited because she couldn’t afford the life that she wanted, but several personal finance articles later, Erika felt empowered to make decisions that she knew would help her future.
Since college she has been able to learn from her mistakes, pay off debt, and use money as a tool to contribute to organizations that align with her values. One of the things she loves doing with her money is being able to take family trips with her parents; something they were never able to afford growing up
What is the best financial advice you were ever given?
An old boss in college, who I really admired, encouraged me to start contributing to a retirement account as soon as I could. When I got my first job out of college, and was offered a 401k with a match, I signed up even though I had no idea what I was doing.
What is your best and worst financial decision?
Worst financial decision was moving into an apartment with others with no liquid savings of my own. When I wanted to leave, I was stuck in the apartment until the lease ended 10 months later.
This led to my best financial decision, which was having an emergency fund. When one of my family members had a medical emergency last year, I was able to jump on the next flight to go support them. I remember not having to worry about money at all, because I had savings for this exact reason.
What are you working for?
