Why You Should Still Apply for Jobs That You Aren't Qualified For

One of the most common questions that a recruiter hears is “Do you think I qualify for this position?” But “qualifying” for a position may not be as black and white as you think. Limiting yourself to positions you think you objectively qualify for can mean that you miss out on a lot of opportunities (and money!). Here are a few reasons why employers will still interview a candidate who does not have the technical skills for the current position.

An amazing cover letter

If you have an amazing cover letter, recruiters and/or HR personnel will be more inclined to interview you. Talk about how your interpersonal skills relate to the position you are applying for, mention the CEO, or even discuss how you might have volunteered for something similar — it matters!

Demonstrated enthusiasm for the role or company

Some positions may ask you questions about why you’re applying or what attracted you to the role. Be as specific as possible! Don’t write an essay, but don’t write one sentence either. Recruiters read these sections and it could be the deciding factor between you and another candidate. Show how you’ll add value to the company!

Transferrable skills

Believe it or not, hiring managers recognize that certain positions are interchangeable. For example, a travel agent may be a great bank teller because of their personable skills. Both jobs require great customer service and while they are in different fields, field-specific skills can be gained through on-the-job training!

Final Thoughts

What’s the number one reason stopping you from going for the position? Rejection! As humans, we all fear rejection. But, think of it this way: we get rejected from jobs that we qualify for, why not take the risk to gain an opportunity in a whole other field?! Don’t let your own self-doubt stop you from going for a position that you may be a great fit for!

When applying for positions that you do not typically apply for, tailor your resume, try to get a referral from someone who works in the company (LinkedIn is your friend! Use it!), and remember like I said earlier to modify that cover letter. You’re more qualified than you think!
