Credit cards are a complicated topic. They can be misused and land us in debt but nevertheless, credit cards play an important role in our overall financial health. Whether you are looking for a secured card to build your credit, a cashback card that helps you get rewarded on day-to-day purchases, or travel rewards cards that help you travel more for less, do your research to figure out the best cards for you.
Different Categories of Credit Cards
Cashback Cards
Cashback credit cards reward you for using your card by offering cash back. This means you'll get a percentage of your spending back in the form of a statement credit or direct deposit, which you can use towards your next credit card statement.

Balance Transfer Cards
Balance transfer cards allow users to transfer over high interest credit card balances to cards with lower interest rates. These can be a powerful tool to lower your overall monthly payments when you are paying off debt. Typically, balance transfer cards offer a 0% interest rate for an introductory period, which usually ranges from 12-18 months.

Travel Cards
Travel credit cards earn points that can be redeemed for flights, hotels, or other travel expenses. They often have lucrative sign on bonuses that help reduce or eliminate travel costs and can also come with other perks like travel protection, trip insurance, and priority boarding.

Best Card to Earn Points on Rent
We know rent is one of your biggest expenses every month and since it is paid by check or out of a checking account, you typically cannot earn points on this unless you pay a hefty 3% credit card transaction fee. Did you know there is a card that lets you earn points when you pay rent with no transaction fee? It’s the Bilt Mastercard®! We love that there is no annual fee and that it lets you earn points for something you have to pay for anyways. You earn 1X Bilt Points on rent payments (up to 100,000 points in a calendar year), 2X points on travel, 3X points on dining, and 1X points on other purchases. And on the 1st of each month, you can get double points on other purchases except for rent. See Rewards and Benefits. Just know that you must use the card at least 5 times each statement period to earn points. You can redeem points toward a credit on your next rent statement, travel, toward a future home down payment, and more!
Credit Building Cards
Even if you have bad credit or little to no credit history, credit cards can still help you improve your credit score. Remember that the most effective way to boost your credit score is to pay your credit cards on time and in full. This will create a positive payment history, which is the most important factor in your credit score. If you are just starting to build your credit from scratch or rebuilding your credit after a setback, take a look at secured credit cards and other tools for building your credit score on our Building Credit page.

Business Cards
At the Financial Gym, we always recommend separating your personal and business finances whether you freelance, have a part-time side hustle in addition to your full time job, or own a company with employees. Having a business credit card to use solely for your business expenses can help you stay organized and keep track of how your business is doing. Knowing what type of expenses your business spends the most money on is key to figuring out what business credit card is the best choice for you. You can earn cashback, airline miles, and/or hotel/travel points with these cards but certain cards offer more points for certain expenses such as office supplies, shipping, and travel.
